The Salty Roommate

Year: 2025

Landscape regeneration

Tools: Autocad/ Illustrator/ Photoshop/ Rhynoceros/ V-Ray

Team: Elena Camisasca, Elisa Quaggio, Li Jiangshen

The project, titled The Salty Roommate, reimagines the saline landscape of Cádiz Bay, Andalusia, Spain as a space of ecological restoration and human connection. Nestled between an urban environment and a protected nature reserve, the project addresses the challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and the neglect of traditional salinas. Through innovative, biodegradable design, it aims to restore the fragile ecosystem, support local biodiversity, and create spaces for therapeutic and educational experiences.

The project is structured around a series of renaturalization devices: Device A - The Green House fosters bird nesting and vegetation growth, dissolving into the ecosystem over time; Device B - The Living Room is a multifunctional pavilion for research and education that transitions from human use to ecological dominance; and Device C1 - The Sound Bath and Device C2 - The Salt Bath provide health benefits through soundscapes and halotherapy. These devices are strategically placed along a permeable, accessible Promenade, inviting diverse visitors to explore the salina while minimizing environmental impact. Over time, as the devices degrade, they enrich the landscape, leaving behind habitats for birds, insects, plants, and crustaceans.
